Human-computer interaction, Virtual reality, Augmented reality, Cultural Artifact Embodiment
This paper is a preliminary investigation of the virtual experience of interacting with a three-dimensional artifact, the oriental paper parasol, in virtual reality and augmented reality environments. Through experiments designed to explore different aspects of virtual experience, this study measures the attitude toward the oriental paper parasol, which can be viewed as the tradition of craftsmanship from the past or as an umbrella still can be used today. The findings show that participants who experienced the paper parasol in the virtual reality environment tended to think the paper parasol represents craftsmanship from the past. Participants who experienced the paper parasol in the augmented reality environment tended to think the paper parasol is an umbrella. The findings are discussed with respect to their implication for how further development of technology may mediate thoughts on the cultural meaning of the artifact.
