This paper presents a brief review on the fractional order controller and its applications in various upcoming fields such as process control, robotics and power electronics. Further, various problems arising in case of conventional PID is listed and how the fractional order PID (FOPID) proves beneficial is presented. Finally, existing fractional order PI controller design approach is presented in a simplified manner with the help of numerical example.
