Abstract

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has been putting in great deal of efforts to lead green technologies and increase energy efficiency through smart grid in Korea. Superconductor technology is a part of smart grid and this technology will be at the fore of green technologies. KEPCO is focusing on high temperature superconducting (HTS) cables and superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL). HTS cable enables power transmission to have high-capacity more than conventional cable. And SFCL controls fault current effectively when fault occurred. KEPCO has verified AC 22.9kV, 50MV, 410m HTS cable and 22.9 630A SFCL in Icheon substation in Sep. 2011. Also DC 80kV HTS cable and AC 154kV HTS cable are expected to demonstrate by 2014. In this paper, background of these projects and plan for future power grid in KEPCO will be described.
