Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility whether confocal laser microscopy could be used to assess the surface integrity of hydrogels after placement in an in vitro circulation. Methods: a polymer was placed in an artificial circulation. The gel surface was visualized and analysed with matlab from images acquired with a confocal laser microscope. Results: The data in this study show that confocal laser microscopy can be used to investigate surface integrity of hydrogels. As proof of concept no damage to the surface of a test sample could be defined, although the surface was slightly bulged.
