Abstract

WiMAX has provided a platform to address the high data rates for fixed, nomadic and mobile users. However there are some aspects of the IEEE 802.16 standard which have been left to the vendor which include scheduling and resource allocation algorithms. An important aspect of resource allocation algorithms is the fairness aspect as seen by different subscribers. To analyze the performance of WiMAX and explore fairness issues we simulate various scenarios of WiMAX networks with emphasis on analyzing the impact of distance between the Subscriber Station (SS) and the Base Station (BS). The simulations indicate that certain fairness issues exist with SSs closer to the BS getting priority in connections. To overcome this issue an admission control protocol is proposed and briefly analyzed.
