Landslide dams are created when a landslide partially or completely blocks a river channel thus temporarily or permanently producing the impoundment of water. Failure of landslide dams can result in injuries, deaths and property damage. Statistical analysis of landslides dam failures can provide useful information for the prediction of future landslide dam failures and for the mitigation of hazards related to future landslide failure events. This paper attempts to help fill an empirical gap in understanding landslide dam stability by building and estimating models of landslide dam stability for a sample of 34 well documented landslide dams in Italy. The models are estimated using probit models estimated using the method of Gauss-Newton.
