Abstract

Intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar power and wave power are highly variable output. Theses energy sources are most of the time not load following. Consequently, renewable energy has limited contribution in power generation and it is difficult to be controlled. It is often stated that, this problem of intermittent renewable can be solved by integration with energy storage. This paper investigate the effect of round trip efficiency (RTE) on the cost of energy storage. The cost of different storage technologies were compared to the electricity price arbitrage of the UK market.
