A new output feedback direct adaptive fuzzy sliding mode (AFSM) algorithm is proposed. The method can be applied to a broad class of unknown nonlinear systems. For this purpose, an AFSM observer is proposed for an output feedback AFSM scheme, where the observer estimates the state tracking error. Unlike many of the previous works, the system output need not be considered as the first entry of a canonical-form state vector. Such an observer alleviates some important limitations in the design of output feedback AFSM algorithms. Numerical simulations on a chaotic dynamical system depicts the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
