POWER NETWORK PARTITIONING FOR SECONDARY VOLTAGE CONTROL USING CONDITIONAL ENTROPY

Abstract

This paper presents three methods to obtain an electrical distance (ED) measure that is applied to divide a power network into voltage control areas (VCA). The analysis of the ED measures is based on a comparison of their mathematical definition and their evaluation of the VCA on the IEEE 39 bus test system. To evaluate the coupling between VCA, the present paper proposes a new method by calculating an ED between areas using conditional entropy. This measurement, together with a satisfaction index proposed in the literature, the cluster tightness index (CTI), provides a better understanding of the VCA partitions. The usefulness of a new evaluation criterion is its capacity to evaluate separately the influence between every area as well as compensating the CTI lack to identify the appropriate number of areas in a partition. The results are presented for the IEEE 39 bus and IEEE 118 bus systems, showing the advantage of using the proposed evaluation criteria.
