Abstract

This paper presents the optimal automatic generation control (AGC) regulator designs for two-area interconnected power systems with identical plants consisting of reheat thermal turbines. The dynamic model of interconnected power system is modified by the incorpora- tion of DC transmission link in parallel with AC transmission link as area interconnection to present the investigations with designed optimal AGC regulators under load perturbations in the system. Moreover, the model of integral of area control error (ACE) has been modified to incorporate the dynamics of DC link so that an additional signal equivalent to tie-line power deviation on DC link can be introduced in the system dynamic model. The present study aims to incorporate both of these aspects judiciously in the design of optimal AGC regulators for two-area interconnected power system. The inclusion of deviation in incremental power flow through DC link in the modelling of ACE of both areas has favourable effect on settling time of system dynamic response plots coupled with smooth settling trend. Incorporation of DC link in the dynamic model of interconnected power system as an interconnection in parallel with AC link offers the better system dynamic response as compared to those obtained without considering the DC link model. The power system dynamic performance is obtained with optimal AGC regulators in the wake of 1% load disturbances.
