Abstract

Gas insulated substations (GISs) are being widely used all over the world on account of environmental and operational advantages. On-line partial discharge (PD) measurement is important in GIS for ensuring their reliability during service and can reveal defects in GIS at incipient levels. One of the methods employed for PD measurement is by capturing the acoustic signals that emanate from the PD sites. In the present study, characteristics of the acoustic PD signals for various defects such as a crack on insulator surface, metallic particles on the high-tension (HT) conductor as well as on the grounded enclosure, floating particles and sharp protrusions on the HT conductor have been analyzed. This study has been carried out on a 145-kV gas insulated bus duct using an acoustic PD detector. Further, voltage required for inception, stabilization and extinction of PD for a given defect and acoustic PD behaviour for various defects at different voltages have been analyzed and reported. The acoustic signals are also compared with PD levels measured using a straight mode electrical method. The study further aims to identify the defects that can be detected at premature level (low PD level).
