Abstract

For power quality (PQ) monitoring and recordings, it is essential to locate the PQ event and partition the data into event and non-event parts, so that each segment only belongs to one PQ event which is caused by a single underlying reason, and then characterize each event. With analysis of triangular characteristics of three neighbouring voltage samples, a new method for locating and characterizing of transient PQ event is proposed in this paper, named as rotating vector method. By constructing a suppositional rotating vector with three neighbouring samples, the method extracts the instantaneous magnitude, phase, and disturbance. With the three features, the method gets the starting and ending time of the PQ event. Finally, the method realized to locate and characterize the PQ event. Simulation results show that the proposed method could locate and characterize most of transient PQ event effectively, including voltage sag, swell, oscillation, and transient pulse. The accuracy and speed of the method is good too.
