“Promoter Recognition”, “Bayesian Networks”, and“Genetic Algorithms”
The genes in DNA sequences are transcribed into RNA sequences, and then translated into proteins. A promoter is a DNA region that controls and regulates the transcriptional initiation of the gene. Identifying promoter regions is important but difficult. This article proposes the use of Bayesian networks to identify promoter regions. The complex interactions among nucleotides in DNA sequences are integrated into Bayesian networks. Also a genetic algorithm is proposed to learn the structure of the Bayesian network for promoter recognition. The experimental results show that the Bayesian network with the proposed genetic search significantly increases classification accuracy for a promoter data set in the experiments.
