MAC, CSMA, TDMA, wireless sensor networks
This paper presents a traffic aware hybrid MAC protocol, called THMAC, which meets different traffic requirement for different nodes in clustering-based wireless sensor networks and combines the strengths of TDMA and CSMA while offsetting their weaknesses. THMAC schedules time slots discriminately for different kinds of sensor nodes and uses different idle listening and sleeping strategy to improve energy efficiency. Only part of slots allocation is rescheduled when the network is reorganized. Backbone nodes have higher priority on sharing unallocated slots or temporary unused slots. By doing this way, THMAC can work very energy efficiently in the overall lifetime of large-scale wireless sensor networks.
