Abstract

In this work, the use of a rate-adaptive transmission scheme based on silence periods and treated as runlength limited (RLL) sequence is proposed in order to mitigate the adverse effect of atmospheric turbulence in optical free space communications. Results show that the bit er ror rate obtained by the proposed scheme is similar to that of the Viterbi algorithm with a much lower computational load.
