Abstract

Software extension and improvement often cause near exponential rise of software complexity and maintenance costs. The main cause of complication in data-centric software (incl. many scientific applications) is complication of data storage. So, the choice of data storage architecture in such applications could dramatically affect further growth of software complexity and maintenance costs. The paper addresses issues of developing data storage architecture applied to configuring complex physical equipment. As a possible solution the paper introduces the Unified Configuration System approach. It could be used to decrease complexity growth rate in a group of heterogeneous applications that needs centralized configuration management.
