On the Double Doppler Effect Generated by Scatterer Motion

Abstract

In a time-varying transmission environment, the received signal components are subject to frequency shifts due to the Doppler effect. The Doppler frequency is dependent on the carrier frequency and the environment variation rate. In a fixed wireless channel, the channel variation is caused by scatterer motion. In such a channel, if the channel is Non Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) and the Angle of Arrival (AoA) is uniformly distributed in [0, 2π), the Doppler power spec trum exhibits a peak at ν = 0. In this paper, we investi gate analytically the Doppler effects generated by scatterer motion under different scatterer velocity distributions. The analytical curves are compared with some previously pub lished measurement results and adequate correspondences are drawn. At low speeds, e.g. generated by moving fo liage, the exponential velocity distribution is a good model of the time-varying nature of the fixed wireless channels. On the other hand, further research is needed to find a suit able velocity distribution to describe high-speed fixed wire less channels, e.g. generated by passing vehicles.
