In this paper the calculation of long term BER for optical wireless link with on-off keying modulation format in the turbulent atmospheric transmission channel is presented. The link model used for simulations comprises all important parts of an optical wireless communication system and allows setting the parameters of laser diode, transmitting lens, Gaussian beam, receiver lens, photodiode and parameters of preamplifier of an optical receiver. For modeling the influence of turbulence on link performance the modified Rytov scintillation theory is used. Based on the presented model, the long term BER and equivalent power loss in turbulent atmosphere were evaluated. Paper extends the well known analysis of scintillation loss performed for a plane wave to a Gaussian beam propagation, which includes, in addition, the propagation loss.
