Abstract

This paper presents a switched capacitor (SC) power conditioner which employs a new control method that aims to increase the capability of SC scheme for following command signals with high derivatives around the zero-crossing points of the voltage at the point of common coupling, especially for nonlinear loads. Further, the capacitor voltages are controlled with simple control strategy, based on the energy balance concept, to be maintained at certain level above the peak of the supply voltage to improve the SC scheme controllability. The advantages of the power conditioner circuit are simplicity of control circuit, low cost (a smaller energy-storage capacitor) and good transient response. Steady-state operation and transient analysis are carried out to analyse the performance of the scheme under different operating conditions. Finally, experimental results are provided to demonstrate the validity of the analysis and design procedure.
