Abstract

Sustainable development requires the integration of three components – economic development, social development and environmental protection. Renewable energy, by definition, fulfils the sustainability criteria and will therefore deliver efficient contributions to sustainable development. In this context wind energy projects represent environmental projects in that they are designed to find sustainable supply forms, energy that might otherwise come from fossil fuels with their harmful impact on the environment and climate. However, wind farms may also cause negative impacts on the environment. The paper describes a computer aided decision support tool for the site planning of wind farms. The wind farm design process combines the optimization of the power generation with the reduction of the environmental impacts.
