Abstract

The effect of oxygen on the removal of toluene in a biofilter was investigated experimentally. Removal efficiencies at various oxygen contents in the feed were analyzed in light of theoretical model predictions. The agreement between model predictions and experimental data are good for the cases considered. The results show that the increase in oxygen concentration improves the percent removal of toluene in a biofilter. The results suggest that by enriching the feed with oxygen, desired removal rates can be achieved in a relatively small size biofilters when space restrictions and environmental factors are of utmost concern in the design of biofilters.
