We propose and experimentally demonstrate an arbitrary microwave signal generator based on a single bandpass photonic filter. The system operation principle is based on an optical source whose power distribution can be modified by using and optical channel selector and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A theoretical analysis and experimental measurements show that arbitrary pulse profiles can be achieved by means of different optical source spectra. A tuning range around 20 GHz can be implemented due to the difference in the time delay introduced by the variable delay line in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The approach is adapted to Multiband UWB pulse generation by selecting the corresponding optical spectrum profile. Reconfiguration and tuning capabilities allow generated waveforms fitting the FCC spectral requirements.
