Abstract

This paper is a report of an Internet discussion project on environmental issues between French and Japanese elementary school children. The title of the conference is Mottainai. The Japanese word mottainai means “what a waste” in English. During the conference, the children use webcams to communicate on the Internet. The French and Japanese children considered waste according to their own experiences and discussed their findings with their international partners. The audience, mass media, and children were all affected by the experience. After the conference, the Japanese teachers discussed some pedagogical findings. This paper is a report on e discussions and pedagogical strategies gleaned from them.
