Abstract

We present an offline optimization framework for wireless sensor network design in terms of performance to select an optimal set of protocols, considering application-specific requirements, deployment constrains and energy characteristics. A genetic algorithm is used as the optimization tool of the designed system and an appropriate fitness function is derived to incorporate many aspects of network performance. The configuration attributes optimized by the genetic algorithm system comprise the selection of the communication protocols and the number of nodes to be deployed in a fixed area.
