This paper covers some existing connectivity for vehicles approaches to handle mobility at the network layer and proposes an architecture to control the operation of different technologies which are suitable to be part of the roadside wireless infrastructure. The architecture complements Mobile IP by providing the user a mechanism to retrieve IP prefixes in advance for the generation of the subsequent care-of-addresses related to potential point-of-attachments. The architecture can serve as the basis for an appropriate service mobility framework for vehicles which can support the deployment of future innovative IP-based on-road services.
