This paper describes the possibilities of speech synthesis application in those activities that are typical of ship engine room simulator training. Examples are given of fault scenarios, checklists and assessment with an embedded artificial voice. The paper also discusses problems related to speech synthesis application in two ways: the understanding of artificial speech on the one hand and voice recognition issues on the other .
