Abstract

Semi-arid Botswana located in the Southern African Region is highly dependant on its natural resource base for its development. In contrast, low rainfall, high evaporation, flat topography and typical geomorphology contribute towards limited water supplies, which are expected to deteriorate with the ongoing climate change. This paper looking at the various major sources of water resources of the country reviews the ongoing and projected demand along with the proposed priorities in water resources management. Based on these, recommendations comprising of water accounting and an allocation mechanism along with various demand management strategies have been suggested to manage this diminishing resource.
