The paper addresses the problem of accurately deter mining the time resolved velocity of red blood cells in small superficial capillaries (both arterial and venous) by trans dermally imaging these blood vessels recognizing moving red blood cells and tracking these cells over their trajecto ries. Typical applications are in the medical field such as drug efficacy tests or determining the effectiveness of med ical treatments of various kinds. We give details about the optical setup the image ac quisition and the processing of the video data stream to fi nally obtain accurate velocity estimates of the blood flow in single superficial capillaries.
