Music, visualization, icon, symbol, and musical genre.
We arranged an online questionnaire to study the feasibility of representing musical genres with icons. The participants were shown 42 different icons and asked which of 17 listed musical genres comes to their mind when looking at each icon. The results suggest that musical genre may be presented by an icon and it can be recognized accurately. The most successful icons were country (96% of participants made the same association between icon and genre), world music (93%), classical (92%), gospel (89%), and jazz (79%). On the average, the participants made 19 correct associations out of 42.
