Cable-overhead transmission system, overhead-cable-overhead trans- mission system, power cable, fault location, synchronized data, fault resistance
A new accurate fault location technique for an underground power cable combined with an extra high voltage (EHV) transmission line is described in this paper. The analysis shows that the negative sequence voltages at the fault point and at the junction have different characteristics when the fault occurs in the overhead line or in the power cable, which can be used to discriminate the faulted section. In the selected section, the developed method, based on distributed parameters, could ensure high location precision. The new technique is suitable for both cable-overhead line (CO) and overhead-cable- overhead (OCO) transmission system. Considering the influence of the shunt capacitance and the distributed parameter, the method can obtain high accuracy. At the same time, the precision will not be affected by the fault resistance and unsynchronized data, thus, it also has a high reliability. The new fault location system is developed and the practical implementation is also demonstrated. Test results based on simulation and field data show its high precision under different conditions.
