A SPH-based Method to Simulate Local Scouring

A method for the numerical prediction of scouring processes is proposed. The method is based on a Lagrangian description of the flow by Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, coupled with a description of the bed evolution based on the Exner equation and solved by a finite-difference predictor-corrector scheme. The numerical solutions are compared with measurements of bed evolution and water velocity, obtained in a case of local scour downstream of a protection apron caused by a planar jet flowing from a sluice gate. The results show that the predicted evolution of position and depth of the maximum scour agrees quite well with the experimental data.
