Abstract

This paper presents an application of the Ant colony optimization metaheuristic to the terrain generation, in which a 3 dimensional continuous search space is considered. 3D terrain generation is frequent used in computer graphics, games, simulation and training environments, engineering, movies and artistic applications. Numerous construction techniques and software were introduced and developed. However, the paper presents an initial study and investigation of the possibilities offered by ACO to generate 3D terrain, describes the general underlying idea, present a first implementation and provides some preliminary results. The results show that ant colony optimization is a promising approach for creation of artificial 3D terrain objects.
