MIMO wireless networks, with multiple antennas at the source and the destination, introduce a transmission diver sity to improve robustness to fading and interferences, and ensure data reliability. Such technique has been general ized to simple nodes, with only one antenna, that cooperate in a virtual MIMO manner. This is mainly due to Space Time Block Coding (STBC) techniques used at the phys ical layer. Cooperation is realized by using a relay node that helps the source-destination transmission. Elsewhere, MAC protocols proposed for wireless nodes cooperation are mainly based on forwarding the received frames from a source node to a destination node. In this paper, we intro duce a novel cross-layer MAC protocol for wireless cooper ative ad hoc networks. This MAC protocol, named Diver sity Driven MAC protocol, is based on STBC techniques at the source node, and an amplify and forward technique at the relay. Simulations results are given to show the ef fectiveness of the proposed protocol regarding the 802.11a legacy MAC protocol.
