Abstract

One of the neglected aspects in preparing students for teaching is to train them in communicative behavior. Communicative behavior includes productive (e.g. speaking) and receptive (e.g. understanding) communicative patterns. To enable students to reflect on existing behavioral patterns, generate new ones and consciously deal with them needs time and specific learning possibilities. We created a learning scenario which is focused on the receptive part of communication. In this virtual teacher training video-sequences of teaching behavior are implemented into a web-based learning environment. In our study we examined to which extent self-explanations foster the ability to reflect receptive communicative behavior and lead to a differentiated understanding of utterances.
