Abstract

Geographic information system (GIS) has become available for many years in scientific research and military applications. Web mapping service is one of GIS applications. It combines GIS and web technologies to create mapping on the Internet. Recently it has found many applications in tourism and real estate. In this paper, two most popular free web servers Google Maps and Virtual Earth are extensively reviewed and compared. The specific algorithms for conference planning and scheduling are demonstrated using Google Maps. The availability of Google Maps and Virtual Earth fundamentally change the way of location-based applications on the Internet and provide a platform for an innovative geospatial and semantic webs solutions. It has demonstrated in this paper that web mapping has huge potential for location-based decision marking in the future.
