Abstract

The present paper deals with a common problem in water supply systems - detection of partial blockages in pipelines. A mathematical model based on damping of fluid tran sients for the case of several partial blockages in a pipe is analyzed. A one-dimensional linearized equation for un steady pressure perturbation is solved analytically by the method of the Laplace transform. The analysis is based on blockage-induced transient damping of individual Fourier components of the solution. The limitations of the formula for blockage detection proposed in the literature are dis cussed.
