Surface flatten, Mass-spring model, Strain energy, and Numerical simulation
3D surface flattening is a hot research theme in the field of computer aided design and manufacture. A numerical simulation method for surface flattening is proposed in this paper. First of all, a 3D surface is flattened to a 2D pattern by Geodesic curvature method. Then an accurate 2D pattern is created through building up the mass-spring model and carrying out the interactive operation. On the other hand, it can reduce the strain energy and improve the accuracy of 2D pattern appearance by way of trimmed surface. Finally, several examples of developable and non-developable surfaces are simulated in order to prove the feasibility of the method in this paper.
