Simulations of complex systems models provide a numer ical laboratory for studying emergent spatial phenomena. We report on simulations of the 2-dimensional spatial pris oners’ dilemma with both 4- and 8-neighbour playoffs. We identify non-monotonic dependence of the convergent pop ulation of defectors with the variation of defection tempta tion reward in the 8-neighbour system. We present some microscopic configuration analyses to explain this phase transitional effect.
