Abstract

In this paper, optimal placement of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices such as thyristor controlled series compensators (TCSC) and unified power flow controller (UPFC) devices have been determined for both six-bus and practical Indian utility 75-bus systems using sensitivity analysis. Variations of objectives such as the real power loss of the line, total system real power losses and power transfer of the selected line have been discussed graphically for different percentage compensation of TCSC impedance (Xc) of the most sensitive lines to understand the system better in a competitive environment. The solutions are found to be quite encouraging and the approach can easily be extended to modern FACTS devices like generalized unified power flow controller and inter-line power flow controller and to any other practical utilities.
