Tunable delay lines, ultra-wideband (UWB), bandgap structures, microstrip technology
We present the design of an electronic ultra-wideband (UWB) tunable time-delay system suitable for nanosecond-scale delays. The system realizes much larger delays than most existing UWB schemes by employing dispersive electromagnetic bandgap structures in microstrip or stripline technology, combined with conventional broadband mixers. System delay is controlled using a wideband voltage-controlled oscillator. We demonstrate in simulation a 1.6 ns delay excursion for a 4 GHz bandwidth signal.
