Abstract

The paper presents the results of a research work aimed to assess the possibility to protect the 2x25 kV-50Hz lines supplying the High Speed Electric Railway Lines in Italy against the so-called “Separation Section Fault”. This kind of fault causes apparent impedances close to the ones measured in normal conditions be seen by the distance relays. The research has drawn to the conclusion that, if some special operation restrictions are adopted, with proper setting of the relay protection, it is possible to detect also this kind of fault. Clear indication is given in the paper on the necessary settings to be given to the relays and on the operation practices to be observed.
