Abstract

This paper gives an overview of ongoing research into a new transport architecture for messages across the Inter net. It demonstrates how a split delivery system (delivering a minimal message, storing large or alternative parts for later, optional, retrieval) can be created. It also includes es timates on the additional efficiency of such a system over traditional SMTP, drawing on a survey of 51056 emails to provide estimates on MIME sizes and other key features of email.
