The principal aim of this paper is to describe the current situation of microgrids as an integrated energy system in distribution networks. The report discusses the technical and economical issues associated with microgrids and gives an overview of the difficulties and potential drawbacks that hinder their development. As well, this study focuses on the different components of a Microgrid system and on its two operating scenarios. Finally, the paper has a look at the new concept of smartgrid, which couples communication and electricity and makes reference to the current endeavors in the USA to develop this new and revolutionary technology.
