Abstract

This paper presents best control strategy for Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). In this paper three different and new control strategies for Unified Power Quality Conditioner is presented and their operation is investigated and compared via MATLAB Simulink. In the first case, the control strategy of Parallel Active Filter (PAF) and Series Active Filter (SAF) are based on Fourier transform theory. In the second case, the control strategy of Parallel Active Filter is based on PQ theory and control strategy of Series Active Filter is based on Fourier theory, too. In the third case, the control strategy of Parallel Active Filter is based on Fourier transform theory and control strategy of Series Active Filter is based on positive sequence detection. Operating of PAF using these methods compensate for reactive power and current harmonics, while operation of SAF compensates for imbalances, voltage harmonics and positive and zero sequences of utility voltages. Compensation resolution and speed of three new mentioned control strategies are explained using MATLAB software and via simulation. From results it is known that third control strategy between these three control approaches has best compensation speed and resolution.
