Abstract

IP-based Multimedia network Subsystem has been speci fied by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). This network architecture will allow mobile operators to pro vide multimedia Internet applications to mobile users. It uses the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) defined Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling and Session De scription Protocol (SDP) to manage multimedia application over 3G networks. The support of service orchestration schemes into such architecture will provide complex appli cations deployments yielding to a heavy SIP signaling load into the network. Network operators will be concerned of such load and its impact on the network performance. This paper provides SIP IMS signaling performance evaluation over real 3G Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W CDMA) network. It analyses the transfer delay and pack ets lost using either 3G modem or PCMCIA card based SIP User Agent (UA).
