Abstract

This paper proposes a fast image classification technique for skin color segmentation proper for real-time applications. The method is then applied to an active head tracking system. In this system the camera tracks person’s head and its movements and orientations in a complex environment automatically by its pan and tilt actions. Tracking is formulated as an active visual servo problem based on the integration of saccade and smooth pursuit processes. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system in overcoming challenges such as target occlusion, existence of multiple people or other objects with similar color in the scene and out of plane rotation.
