Different criteria have been studied to determine adequate non-linear scaling factors for handwritten text. It is shown that scaling operation has also the effect of filtering out most of the uninformative background by resizing the ascenders and descenders which cause the inclusion of uninformative zones. These criteria were tested against two spontaneous corpora, probing to be consistent in the view of the recognition results.
