Tone mapping, luminance, visualization, image quality.
A fine computer graphics model may lead to poor image display, due to the limitations of the display device. This is particularly true when dealing with nighttime scenes, first because of the high luminance dynamic range between dark areas and light sources, secondly because of the image quantization of the dark levels. We propose a specific Tone Mapping Operator (TMO) devoted to this kind of images, and compare it to usual TMO of the literature, both in terms of visual appearance and performance in the visual scene.
