Abstract

Photographic composition rules can be seen as heuristics used to help choose subjects for photography and to define their arrangement and relation to the background. Within the above context, this paper presents an approach for au tomating photographiccomposition rules for scenes involv ing people, that may be useful to the casual photographer in a number of imaging and printing applications. This pa per addresses three specific rules: rule-of-thirds, zoom and integrity of the subjects. An experimental evaluation of the proposed algorithms involving 1327 arbitrary images has been performed and the outputs evaluated by a number of human observers, with promising results.
