Oral English proficiency, synchronous computer mediated communication (SCMC)

Abstract

The current research on synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) is focused on text-based SCMC, and this exploration of text-based SCMC has proved its effectiveness in improving students’ English reading and writing skills. But with the increasing trend in globalization, oral English proficiency is becoming more important. However, little research has been conducted to investigate the influence of voice-based SCMC on oral English skills. This paper reports on an ongoing project that uses voice-based SCMC as a learning tool to help students practice English-speaking skills in their free time. The research design, participants, instruments, and data analyses of this project are described.
